Coral Reef

The Coral Centre is in the process of transitioning from a Low COIN Specialist Centre for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) to a High COIN Specialist Centre for children with communication and interaction needs including autism (COIN).

Admissions to the Coral Centre are managed by Surrey County Council SEND admissions once an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) has indicated as appropriate for a High COIN centre provision.

Our dedicated and experienced team of special educational needs teaching and support staff work alongside speech and language therapists from Surrey County Council to meet the individual needs of the Coral Centre pupils. Within the Coral Centre there is a focus on providing a specialist provision within a positive environment and individualised programmes of learning to meet the needs of all learners. We achieve this by working alongside each pupil to discover their strengths and maximise potential learning opportunities.

The Coral Centre currently has five classes:

  • Purple Class  is a Reception High COIN class. Purple Class follows the EYFS Curriculum.  Pupils also engage in activities that aim to support their personal development skills such as social skills and speech and language skills with access to the outdoor area to explore different themes. In the afternoons, pupils integrate into the mainstream Reception class.
  • Blue Class is a Year 1 High COIN class. Blue Class follows the Year 1 curriculum with an EYFS approach to learning which is appropriate to the needs of the pupils. In the morning the areas of learning are Maths, reading, writing and phonics activities. In the afternoons, pupils integrate into the mainstream Reception class.
  • Green Class is a Year 2 High COIN class. Green Class follows the Year 2 Curriculum. In the mornings, there is a focus on spelling, phonics, English and Maths with learning expectations in line with mainstream classes with high level of support and specialised approaches and strategies to support the needs of the pupils. In the afternoons, pupils integrate into their mainstream classes for foundation subjects with support.
  • Yellow Class is a Year 3 High COIN class. Yellow Class follows the Year 3 curriculum. In the mornings, there is a focus on English and Maths with learning expectations in line with mainstream classes with high level of support and specialised approaches and strategies to support the needs of the pupils. In the afternoons, pupils integrate into their mainstream classes for foundation subjects with support.
  • Gold Class is a mixed Key Stage 2 Low COIN class. Gold Class is phasing out as our pupils leave to move on to their secondary schooling, so that our High Coin provision can grow and develop in line with the local need. Learning in Gold Class follows a similar format to Yellow Class with learning taking place in the Coral Centre in the mornings and integration into mainstream classes in the afternoons.

Integration in the afternoons is a key strength of the Coral Centre in that it enables our centre pupils to be part of their mainstream class and to benefit from the rich learning environment with their mainstream pupils with appropriate support. Centre pupils access the wider curriculum with the rest of their cohort with differentiated activities. The mainstream teachers work with the Centre staff to ensure that progress is being made in all areas of each child’s EHCP plan. Provision is available within the centre for pupils who are unable to access the learning in mainstream classroom in the afternoon. However, the intention and ambition for all Coral Centre pupils is that they will be supported to be able to be included in the mainstream learning in the afternoons as we want all pupils to be part of the mainstream learning and opportunities. Similarly, where appropriate according to age, stage and levels of need, pupils play with their mainstream peers at break and lunchtime and attend whole school assemblies
