PE & Sports Premium

 What is the Sports Premium?

Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6. 

 Purpose of the funding

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer.

This means that we use the premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers
  • make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

The five key indicators are:

  • Key indicator 1: The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that primary school children undertake at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day in school
  • Key indicator 2: The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
  • Key indicator 3: Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • Key indicator 4: Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • Key indicator 5: Increased participation in competitive sport

We are required to publish details of how we spend our sports premium as well as the impact it has on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment.

How we are spending the sports premium?

Meadhurst Primary School uses the sports funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport that we offer.

We use our funding to:

  • Hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers.
  • Introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport through Premier Sports company.
  • Increase the amount of competitive sport in which our children can participate both in the school through inter-house competition and in the community, through our school to school links
  • Develop additional clubs and activities for children, outside the curriculum to foster an enjoyment of physical education and exercise and reach those children who do not always participate in sport and fitness
  • Encourage our children to improve their leadership skills through sport.
  • Give extra support in PE to meet the needs of our most talented children

In this way, all our children will gain new skills and experiences for lifelong fitness and well-being and teachers will learn new techniques and knowledge to aid them in teaching high quality sport and PE.

How do we ensure it is sustainable?

At Meadhurst we aim to use this money to create a sustainable curriculum for all children. 

We will know we have been successful when: 

  • Teachers who have been trained to plan and deliver effective PE lessons apply this in the following academic years and continue to plan and deliver effective PE lessons.
  • Good practice is shared amongst staff, co-ordinated and monitored by the PE Leader.
  • Children are leaders of sports and demonstrate effective techniques that are passed to the younger years.
  • Children enjoy and are enthusiastic about sport, creating a positive sporting culture within school.  Children also have a good understanding of health and well-being.

Aims for 2021-2022 and how they will be achieved:

1)    Delivery of good or better PE and School Sport

a.     Subject lead to attend PE and School Sport courses to ensure updated practice is delivered and embedded.

b.    Sports coaches and Class teachers to deliver high quality PE lessons.

c.    Subject lead to monitor planning to ensure the whole PE curriculum is covered.

d.    Lesson observations and feedback to take place regularly throughout the academic year.

e.    To create and embed a curriculum overview to map skill progression.

f.     To identify and implement an assessment tool to be used by both specialists and teachers.

2)    Improved level of participation of physical activity and competitions inter and intra school.

a.    Regular intra-house and inter-house sport competitions and events.

b.    A range of high quality clubs to be offered to children of all ages throughout the school year (internal and external providers).

3)    To update the equipment to ensure it is of an excellent quality and is accessible to all children

a.    Order new equipment as required to ensure barriers are removed to deliver PE and clubs

4)    To develop general fitness and resilience of all pupils at Meadhurst.

a.    Golden Mile used to enhance fitness levels of children and to aspire them to participate in regular physical activity.

b.    Future development of tracking stamina and improvement to show impact over time.

5)    Recognising and enhancing higher ability children provision for PE

a.    Identify gifted and talented children

b.    Have a recognised programme to develop their skills (‘Chance to Shine’ and ‘Let Girls Play’)

c.    Identify children interested in coaching opportunities, to be offered roles as club leaders throughout the year

6)    Development of swimming skill level for Year 6 children (catch up)

a. Target swimming in year 6 aims for an increase of 35% of children to meet end of KS2 expectations to swim 25m.

b.    Identify children who are not able to achieve this, put a further intervention in place and offer additional opportunities to receive swimming lessons.
