PSHE

The future depends on what you do today.

At Meadhurst Primary School, we believe that PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) plays a vital role in preparing children and young people for happy, healthy and successful lives. Through a carefully planned and age-appropriate curriculum, pupils develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to manage their wellbeing, build positive relationships, stay safe and make informed decisions both now and in the future.

In September 2026, the Department for Education introduced updated statutory guidance for Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education. These changes reflect the realities of growing up in a rapidly changing world and strengthen the curriculum’s role in promoting safeguarding, wellbeing and personal development.

We recognise that parents and carers are children’s first educators and value working in partnership with families. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to support pupils in developing confidence, resilience, empathy and respect for others, enabling them to flourish academically, socially and emotionally. Through open communication and a strong focus on wellbeing and safeguarding, we aim to equip every pupil with the tools they need to navigate modern life safely, responsibly and successfully.

The Jigsaw scheme

Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, is a progressive and spiral scheme of learning. In planning the lessons, Jigsaw PSHE ensures that learning from previous years is revisited and extended, adding new concepts, knowledge and skills, year on year as appropriate.

Jigsaw holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach.

Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, focus and self-regulation.
