Maths
Mathematics is the music of reason.
The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
- reason mathematically
-
can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a range of problems.
How we teach Maths
At Meadhust Primary School, we deliver the National Curriculum aims through the “Maths mastery” approach. Children learn to understand concepts deeply, focusing on the why behind the method. We use the “Maths – No Problem!” programme.
We also use the “Mastering Number” programme to improve number sense and numerical fluency (for example, mental calculations and recall of times tables).
Maths - No Problem!
Maths — No Problem! is a high-quality programme that offers all learners the opportunity to succeed through talk-rich, impactful lessons. The programme’s responsive, mastery-based approach combines accessible resources, personalised learning and data-driven assessment tools to reduce attainment gaps and ensure meaningful progress for pupils of all abilities.
With this programme, maths lessons at Meadhurst are taught with hands-on problem-solving, real world tasks and collaboration. Depth is prioritised over speed — by taking the time to reach the proper depth before moving on ensures that all learners can succeed in later stages.
Mastering Number
This national programme aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention is given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.
Knowledge of multiplication and division and its applications forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum, and is the gateway to success at secondary school. This programme enables pupils in Years 4 and 5 to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense.
