How We Teach Maths

At Meadhurst Primary School we give children the skills to tackle problems, we challenge their thinking and deepen their understanding.

In the Early Years, children develop and deepen their understanding of number and number patterns in practical contexts and problem solving. In their independent learning (indoors and outdoors) and when being taught directly by an adult, children interact with numbers, number patterns, counting and comparing. We make use of the BBC Numberblocks programmes to support learning.

At Meadhurst, we follow the 'Maths No Problem' approach in years 1 to 6 which supports children in developing their knowledge, skills and understanding. This approach involves shared maths talk, the use of resources and the CPA (concrete, pictorial and abstract) approach.

As the children move through the school, they will be taught a range of strategies and skills to enable them to attempt problems and reason about mathematics. The children will learn about number, measurement, geometry and statistics. In later years they also learn about ratio and proportion and algebra.
